Banana Fish is a manga series created そしてillustrated by Akimi Yoshida. It was serialized from May 1985 to April 1994 in Bessatsu Shojo Comic, a magazine that published shojo manga (girls' manga). Set primarily in New York City during the 1980s, the main character is street gang leader Ash Lynx who investigates a conspiracy involving "banana fish", a drug that brainwashes its users. As he uncovers information, Ash is helped by Eiji Okumura, a Japanese photographer's assistant who arrives in New York on a green card and refuses to return to Japan.

Eiji and Ash become close friends in both the manga and anime and their relationship is strained when Yut-Lung, one of Golzine's top enforcers, discovers their bond. As a result, Yut-Lung is forced to kill Eiji in order to save himself from the torture that the foundation would do to him.
